Rotary Club of Mansfield & Partners to our Club meeting

on Wednesday 8th November 2017 6:30pm for 7:00pm
Portland College, Nottingham Road, Mansfield
Speakers Rtn. Paul Bacon & Yvonne Neville
Subject Captain Albert Ball VC
Albert Ball was the most decorated and immensely brave war hero of WW 1.
He was the first man in the Great War to be awarded three
Distinguished Service Orders along with the Military Cross, the Legion
d’honneur (France) and the Order of St George (Russia) and finally a
posthumous Victoria Cross.
Albert was also Britain’s first celebrity fighter pilot:
within just a year, he had amassed 44 confirmed “kills”,
with another 25 unconfirmed. Albert died in France on
7th May 1917 and was buried in a German war grave
cemetery with full military honours.
To mark the 100th anniversary of his death we went to
France, with Nottingham dignitaries, the Albert Ball
Cadets based in Carlton, the Royal Society of St George and family
relatives from the past.
This is an intriguing story of Albert, his Father, Sir Albert Lord Mayor of
Nottingham, his war exploits and the untimely death of this great hero.
